Real Shopify costs in South Africa for 2026: plans in rand, gateway fees, apps, VAT, and worked examples by turnover band. From Honey Whale.
If you run a Shopify store in Africa and sell anything a customer buys more than once, this article is about the revenue you are leaving on the table every month, and the app that fixes it.
Subscriptions on Shopify have never properly worked here. The reason is structural, not a gap in effort, and until now the only options were global apps that quietly fail on renewal or billing systems that live outside your store. GoSimple is a subscription app built in South Africa, for African Shopify stores, and it is live.
Here is what it does and why it matters.
Shopify's built-in subscription feature does not work in Africa. It depends on Shopify Payments, which Shopify does not offer here. The subscribe button appears, the first order goes through, and the renewal never happens.
GoSimple replaces that missing piece. It adds recurring orders, a self-service customer portal, failed-payment recovery, dynamic discounts and, soon, rewards to any Shopify store in South Africa. Every renewal lands in your Shopify admin as a normal order with stock, shipping and VAT handled.
It is priced in rand, with no per-order fees and no set-up fee. Plans and what each includes are on gosimple.app.
It works with the payment provider your store already uses. You do not change how customers pay. You do not change how you get paid out. You switch on subscriptions.
Honey Whale sets it up. We are the Shopify agency behind GoSimple, and we install and configure it for South African stores in under two weeks.
Shopify launched native subscriptions in 2021 and a free Shopify Subscriptions app in 2023. Both bill through Shopify Payments, Shopify's own processor. Shopify Payments is not available in South Africa, or anywhere in Africa, and Shopify has given no date for it.
The practical consequence is that every subscription app built for the US, UK or European market inherits the same dependency. Install one on a South African store, and the widget renders, the plans configure, and the first checkout succeeds because it's a normal purchase. Thirty days later, the renewal fails because nothing on the South African side is authorised to charge the customer again. Merchants find out when the second month's revenue does not arrive.
We have watched this happen to stores selling coffee, supplements, pet food and skincare. Some gave up on subscriptions. Some moved billing into an external portal and lost the Shopify checkout their customers trust. Most just kept selling one order at a time.
South African shoppers already hold 7.2 million active subscriptions. The demand was never the problem. The infrastructure for independent Shopify stores to sell them was.
Honey Whale, Shopify Experts South Africa
GoSimple is a Shopify subscription app built and supported in South Africa. It was designed from the first line of code around the constraints of this market: rand pricing, VAT-inclusive display, month-end payment patterns, local support hours and, above all, recurring billing that works with the payment providers South African stores actually use.
It installs from the Shopify App Store, connects to your existing payment set-up in minutes, and adds a subscribe option to the products you choose. From there it runs the schedule, creates the renewal orders, keeps customers subscribed and shows you the numbers.
Seven things it does that no other option in South Africa does properly.
Customers see "Subscribe and save 15%" beside "Buy once" on the product page, choose a delivery frequency (weekly, fortnightly, monthly, quarterly), and check out through your normal Shopify checkout. The widget inherits your theme's fonts and colours, so it looks like part of your store rather than a bolted-on app. A theme and CSS editor gives full control when you need it.
Every subscription line becomes a Shopify order on each renewal date, with the right products, discount, shipping rate and tax. Your fulfilment process does not change.
Subscribers manage everything themselves: skip the next order, pause for a month, swap a product, change the frequency, reschedule a delivery date on a calendar, update a card. Every one of those is a support email you no longer receive, and every one is a cancellation that did not happen because the customer had a gentler option.
Automatic reminders go out before each renewal so customers can make changes in time. Fewer surprises, fewer disputes.
Most subscription churn in South Africa is involuntary. The customer did not leave; their card declined on the 28th. GoSimple reads the decline reason and acts on it. Insufficient funds triggers a retry sequence spaced around month-end. An expired card triggers a secure update link by email and pauses the subscription instead of cancelling it. Smart Dunning adds escalating reminders.
A flat 10% off forever is a weak reason to stay. GoSimple lets you build a ladder: 10% on order one, 15% by order three, a free gift on order six. Subscribers see the next milestone in their portal and have a reason to stay for it. This is the mechanism behind the loyalty programmes South Africans already respond to, applied to your store.
Standard subscriptions bill each cycle. Prepaid plans take three, six or twelve deliveries upfront, which means cash in the bank now and close to zero churn for the term. Instalment plans split a high-ticket product into scheduled payments, which opens premium products to customers who would not pay the full amount at once. All three run from the same widget and the same portal.
When a subscriber clicks cancel, GoSimple asks why and offers an alternative matched to the reason: a skip if they have too much stock, a discount if it is cost, a swap if they want variety, a pause if they are travelling. Cancellation reasons are logged so you can see the pattern and fix the cause. The flows are fully customisable.
Monthly recurring revenue, active subscribers, churn rate, recovery rate, average subscription lifetime. The dashboard answers the questions a subscription business lives on, without exporting orders to a spreadsheet. Advanced notifications and customer tagging let your email platform know who is a subscriber and where they are in the ladder.
Four modules are in development and will ship as add-ons inside the same app. Retain adds churn analytics and automated win-back. Rewards turns the discount ladder into a full points and tiers programme redeemable at checkout in rand. Bundles lets customers build their own box as a single subscription. Referrals turns your best subscribers into an acquisition channel. Merchants on GoSimple get each one first.
Any product a customer finishes and buys again. The categories below are where we see the strongest repeat-purchase behaviour among the South African Shopify stores we work with, ranked by the indicative share of customers who choose the subscription option once it is offered.
| Category | Plan that works | Cadence | Retention lever |
|---|---|---|---|
| Coffee | Subscribe and save | Every 2 to 4 weeks | Swap roasts; free bag on order six |
| Pet food | Subscribe and save | Monthly | Reschedule by calendar; size swap |
| Supplements | Prepaid 3 or 6 months | Monthly | Discount ladder; prepaid lock-in |
| Water and beverages | Subscribe and save | Weekly or fortnightly | Skip when away; portal reschedule |
| Skincare | Subscribe and save | Every 6 to 8 weeks | Swap products; VIP tier perks |
| Wine | Prepaid club | Monthly or quarterly | Build-a-box (coming); early access |
| High-ticket goods | Instalments | Monthly for 3 to 12 months | Automatic collection; no manual invoicing |

Yes, with GoSimple. Shopify's own subscription feature requires Shopify Payments, which is not available in South Africa, so it does not work here. GoSimple adds recurring orders, a customer portal and failed-payment recovery to any South African Shopify store and works with your existing payment provider.
GoSimple is the only full-service subscription app built in Africa for African Shopify stores. Global apps depend on Shopify Payments and cannot complete a renewal here. Other local apps merely provide recurring billing functionality. GoSimple is priced in rand, supported in South African hours and bills through the payment provider you already use.
